      that isn't rusty..
now if ya want to see rusty..
      roam some n.e. j/y's

      thats just untreated metal rust.
guess the guy never oiled the part..
also.. the box is in line of the tires mud/water . could have helped this along.
as looking at the part it was never oiled,,
every right turn, blasted that joint with road crap,, water/sand/mud

oh and the battery wouldn't happen to sit above this joint?

Flaming River responded to my email and basically said "yep, they rust" (also, they offered no help nor did they seem interested in seeing/investigating the issue).

              Re: Flaming river rust

Let's talk about motivation. I think this is a problem. I also know it would be criminal not to tell a manufacturer that there is a problem and let them deal with it. Most people wouldn't do anything, and then cry and scream for a governmental or legal intervention when the shaft actually fails because of the corrosion.... I'm not, nor will I ever be, that kind of person.
I'm not certain about the whole nail polish solution.... I think I'll clean it and clear it (presuming I can get the upper shaft off)....

              Here's their latest communication:
              Dear Sir,
Since the set screws are still holding the joint onto the shaft, the rust on the bearing caps can be cleaned off,and as long as the button head screws are still able to secure the bearing caps in the joint's yoke, there should not be any safety issues.
The joint's thenselves are nickeel plated, and the oxidation from the bearing caps can be buffed off of the finish of the joint.
The bearing cross' should be fine.
Once the joint is cleaned up (especially the bearing caps) we would recommend applying some clear nail polish to the caps in order to prevent them from rusting again.

              Best Regards,

just move to AZ, you'll be fine.

Cad motor in a chevy 4x4...neat....

Notice the stainless parts (the main housing) did not rust.

How much angle is on that, could you just replace it with a rag joint like it originally used?

I'm kind of stuck using a u-joint for the steering, and now it's on a s-10 frame and preliminary, calibrated eyeballing says I'll need two again...... I guess if I get too worried, I can use GM ones off chev vans.....

                      Re: Flaming river rust

The stainless only took rust due to the mild steel of the screws. My setup has not shown any signs of rust and we have about the same climate that you have.
Keep smiling, makes them wonder whats on your mind.
