Thinking of doing another G-body(would love to have another Monte SS, had an '86)......mainly street-driven, but with trips to the strip as well.

Mid-low-12-second timeslips, on pump gas....go-anywhere, anytime status is important.

Nothing exotic(my wallet just can't take that kind of hit...lol), just simple, durable and effective.....no plans for nitrous at this time.
The first motor I built for the Chevelle was a 355... flat top, stock bottom end, comp 292 cam, and some cheap 2.02/ 1.60 valve heads I ordered from a magazine... I think the company was arrowhead or something. The car ran 13.70's.
Bolt on a set of AFR 195's... change nothing else, the car ran 12.70's.

Whatever you decide to build, use heads with proven results and you'll do alright. It's fun to create your own combo, but you can copy other people's proven combos for more guaranteed results.

Proven combos is exactly what I'm looking for.....get a consensus of what works, and what doesn't.

If I can achieve the desired result without doing a stroker, I'll certainly look at that option. I just like the idea of extra cubes is all.

NOT doing a stroker would certainly mean lower cost for a new rotating assembly...freeing up more $$$$ for machine-shop work on the block, and other parts(including heads).

This is all still in the planning stages, so keep the suggestions/info coming!

I would suggest you keep your eyes and ears open and see what kind of deals come across your path, if you get a killer deal on a forged stock crank - decision made - if you get a killer deal on a stroker kit - decision made..... if santa happens to drop a set of AFR 195s down your chimney - even better!

I wasn't planning on stroking the 428 until a stroker crank became available for cheaper than a stock replacement.... I figured that was God's way of telling me to make it look stock - but not be stock. :
There's always something new to learn.

So I still ask, what are the plans, specific goals?

          There are proven 400hp 350ci combo's...
          there are proven 550hp 383ci combo's...

          Tell me what you want...

Well, I have said low-mid 12's in the quarter, theoretically in an 81-88 G-body(Monte Carlo).....I'd reckon at least 450 horsepower.

Not looking for anything "exotic", go-anywhere anytime capabilities on pump gas....a strong base on which I can build should I choose to get nastier with it.

There are them 2 little 355's under there covers in the shop ready to go.. They have your coveted roller cams and aluminum heads..And they just might beable to get the z to mid 12's......I think you need to consider them!!!! ;D

                  It can be done.

It's all in what's you can deal with.
450hp with 350 cubic inches is doable,
                  good heads(AFR195's will suffice),
and a healthy solid roller(if you can stand the
                  adjustment/check frequency), I think a
Perf RPM A/G may be reaching it's limit here,
but is still up to the job.

With more inches it gets easier to get the power,
along with more usable torque, cost is the deciding factor.

Keep in mind, more inches will want more head too.

True... but... the AFR 195's are awesome on a 400, too. Perhaps not for an all out race motor, but for a street car... tons of torque. As long as it stays below 6500 rpms, they are plenty of head for it.

I agree. Remember, if you keep it around 6000, it'll last a good long time too.

Yet another good reason for more cubes,
less rpm needed for max torque/power.
