  • Need advice on split wishbones on a 32 frame

A budy of mine is building a 29 on 32 frame. It's an aftermarket frame built to mount a 29 body. Sorry but I forget the manufacturer at the moment. I'm not too familiar in building in building street rods and neither is he. I was over at his house last night and he asked me a few question on my thoughts. He's using a I beam axle with 37 spindle along with a split wishbone. Presently he has the frame and no body and the front axle, spring and so on. He was asking me where I thought the brackets should be mounted to the frame for the wishbones along with setting the caster. I reminded him that the caster was going to change with the weight of the car since the axle is going to follow the arc of the wishbone arm. Any final setting of caster will have to waite untill the car is fully assembled. My thoughts on mount the brackets for the tie rod end of the wishbone was to set the tie rod about halfway in on it's threads. The frame is currently leveled. With the front axle and spring, there is currently 0* caster. I was thinking that there should be enough threads to allow for needed caster adjustment with the tie rod threaded half way in.

A minor proble I see but I'll mention it anyway. His wishbone arms are still straight. I see the spindle arms are in the path of the wishbone arms. I was thinking the spindle arms could be heated and bent for clearence for the drag link.

If the spindle arms are cast then they can't be bent.

No, they're not cast, so he should be able to heat and bend them. I also forgot to mention for what it's work is that the front spring crossmember has 7* castor built into it, as the suspension sits ...or hangs now, it reads 0* on the king pin angle.

You should be able to set the ride ht without the engine in place
You just need the get the right springs for it to sit there once it is assembled
        Can you post any pics?

I was thinking about taking some pictures and posting but I didn't have my camera handy. I was telling my friend basically the same, if we knew the final ride height we would have a better idea but regardless everything needs to be placed right to eliminate as much binding and bumpsteer. He's planning on using a 56 F100 box and eliminating the cross steer.
