    Check out Mustangs Unlimited http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/sea...s=aod&x=19&y=8

The 84 AOD isn't a very good unit to start with. The early versions had lubrication problems to the OD section. They would burn out during prolonged high speeds. If he's getting it rebuilt, there's a rear lube kit that was incorporated in later units, I think around 87 is when the rear lube mod was installed. The converter is a mechanical lock up, no computer needed. He'll also need a new speedometer cable and RH pitch speedometer driven gear. The toploader for some odd reason had the speedometer cable going in on the pass side. As a result it's a long cable and the driven gear is a LH pitch. On Mustangs any way, the toploader cable went through the fire wall in a different location, just to the right of the gas pedal on the trans tunnel. Even though he's got a Fairlane, I'm thinking the Mustang stuff will work since the floor pan is similar.

    He'll also need a 351W flywheel since the 351 is a 28 oz unbalance and 5.0s were 50 oz. Pre 82 302s were 28 oz unbalance.

I think i would leave the 4 speed in it. it has 3rd converted to 1 to 1 and had 4th converted to overdrive

Does not the AOD require a TV cable or rod? It will burn up under normal driving very quickly if not attached and adjusted correctly

I think they do have a TV cable, good point! The 4 speed sounds like a mid 70's unit for trucks. I have one sitting in a shed at my mom's house. I took it out of my old 77 Econoline that had a 300 I6. That's right a 4 speed in a van with a floor shifter from the factory! I also have the Hurst shifter I bought to replace the factory unit that kept getting hung up. Once it stuck at night in a bad neighbor hood at night in the dark in the raining, that did it!

TCCOA has a bunch of articles on the AOD that are worth reading. I think there are two different output shaft lengths but I may be thinking C6, can't remember at the moment.

Tom pointed out some of the good stuff. I used a O'reilly carb throttle adapter and modified it a little for the aod in my truck's cable, not that big a deal. I cut the end off of the throttle bracket for the throttle body and screwed it onto the bottom of the throttle bracket. They sit back further than the throttle mount point by about 3/4 inch or so. Depending on the end used on the TV cable, you may have to get on Holley's web page to find the right connector for it. I'll see if I can find the stuff I was using and get pics for you. There is a little fab involved but nothing major.

Lokar makes a cable for use of a carb and a AOD

Yep, and by my checkbook, it is $$$.

You can use the stock junk for 000.00 - after jacking around, I discovered I didn't need to spend the 8.00 for the oreilly holley junk. If you have more time than money, make your own... try a carb'd crown vic cop car ?

The typical performance AOD rebuild requires 3-5 psi at idle read off a normally plugged port on the back of the main case just above the pan. I leave a short #3 braided line connected there all the time so its easy connect a little cheapie 0-15 Gauge attached to a three foot length of plastic oil pressure gauge line so you can see it when you make the adjustment while the engine is running.

The Lokar is pretty reasonable in my book as it is easy to use and very positive to adjust. I fabbed the throttle linkage arm and the mount itself from other stuff I had around as I was fitting to a throttle body that had no provision for a TV cable. The important thing is to get the ratio right between the lever on the trans and the amount of length you add to the arm on the throttle shaft.

Lots of companies now sell rebuild kits for AOD's that will be fine for moderate power up to 450 HP. Beyond that the parts do get pricey in a hurry. I have a Lentech AOD that's been flawless for five years now, lots of street miles and a couple hundred drag strip passes. Cheap no, but it has had to live behind 800 ft/lbs and move 4300# of lard.

Making that swap will inevitably involve a lot of little annoying parts compatibility issues. The AOD output shaft is a different spline and size that the Toploader truck tranny so you need the right slip yoke and get it installed of your drive shaft [which will likely have to be cut] unless you have access to a press. The tranny is also a lot wider and may affect your exhaust routing. There are a number of ready to go aftermarket cross members for the Fairlane SBF/AOD setup and IIRC you may have to 'adjust' the trans tunnel a little bit to keep the engine at the same angle it is now.

hardly seems like a debate to me... particularly behind a 302. I can't see pulling a manual to put in a slushbox, but that's just me. There's probably some reasoning behind it. What's the story on the four speed? Too stiff a clutch? Or just wanting an OD?

I'm faily certain it has an OD 4spd stick right now. I'm betting wanting to take a break from a clutch in a frequently driven car.

Hydraulic clutch throwout bearing will fix that? I've been afflicted with that "want an auto" thought a few times, but then I sober up. Turbo motors seem to like an auto.

If you check some of the Ford mags on the net (Mustangs and Fords, etc) a couple years back they did a whole article on an aod swap into a 64 Fairlane. I would check my books but they are inaccessable right now (stupid renos ).
