  • 1980 trans am door handle replacement?

I'm trying to change the left hand exterior door handle on my 1980 Pontiac trans am. I don't know how to get the handle off. It seems like the door glass is in the way. Do i have to remove the glass to get at the handle? If so how do I remove the glass? Thanks in advance for your help!

It's tuff and flustrating, but I'm able to get my chubby hands in there without taking the glass out.

Have the window all the way up. There is a push rod that pivots in a short lever coming out from the handle, with a clip that must be pushed off of the rod sideways to allow the rod to come out. An open-end wrench will reach the two bolt heads. Band-Aids will be good for small cuts to the fingers.

Be sure to tighten the new one in enough so that you don't have to get back in there again, and thank GM for putting two-hundred-pound doors (with eight ounce handles) on pony cars! Are your hinges shot yet?
