    "Recommendations:

    1. Always use a crossover of one kind or another. Our tests indicate that the X type gives additional improvements over the H type.

    2. Mount the mufflers as far to the rear of the chassis as possible. An important characteristic of the exhaust system (behind the headers) is its ability to dissipate heat energy. Heat loss brings with it, gas volume reduction, enabling smaller mufflers and pipes to be used without penalty.

    3. Always us the largest case muffler that you can fit under the chassis possible. The larger internal volume allows additional acoustical energy to be absorbed ,dissipated and eliminated.

    4. Unless an engine is in the 500+ horsepower level or run at very high RPM, the maximum tailpipe size required for minimal power loss is probably 2.5" diameter. When the exhaust pipes and mufflers drop the temperature significantly, the volume of the exhaust gas is reduced and tailpipe sizes is not as critical.

    5. When you must adapt various pipe sizes, always use long tapered cone reducers, such as, those available from Flowmaster. You can also use a crossover that has reduced pipe sizes built into it."

    Re: some muffler test info

I've seem some of the info before but I can't remember where. I've been discussing mufflers with a friend. I just sent him a link to this.

    Thanks a lot.

I've got the Dynomax Super Turbos on my Chevelle. They're relatively cheap, perform pretty well, and I like the way they sound, too.

I'd add oil filters to that list as well. Wix or AC Delco; never the generic house brands. I've even heard of the cheap air filters causing some (diesel) engines to run poorly.

                Re: some muffler test info

Years ago when I was building my 427 Biscayne the tech rep at Flowmaster told me to mount the mufflers close to the collectors. He said that they're design works better up close where the temp and velocity is higher. Made sense to me. I had the mufflers 18" back of the collectors and the car ran the same with or without them. With a normal "absorbtion" type muffler I would try to get them as far back as possible.

Also remember that most of the above data, especially the topmost listing, is at least over 5 years old.
Today's mufflers may have had modifications that would put them higher or lower in these listings perhaps.

                      Re: some muffler test info

Also, note that most of the mufflers are listed by BRAND not what MODEL they are. Take the flowmasters for instance. The majority of their street oriented mufflers are loud and don't deliver the horsepower that other quieter mufflers do...but the single chambered race mufflers are hard to beat.

Another aspect missed is interior noise. I've run Flowmaster 3" 2 chambers with and without tailpipes. Without tailpipes it was louder, but the interior resonance was insane for both. I ran a cheapo turbo to try to get rid of the resonance, and it killed it...but it also killed the 'cool' sound and slowed the car down a lot. Now with the side exit 3" inlet 2.5" outlet Spintechs, there is no resonance, the idle is quiet and WOT as really LOUD. Ran my quickest time with this setup too.

But the bottom line for most street cars is up to the individual. Does my car sound like I want it to, and can I live with it? Personally I like to make little kids cry.

P.S. those Hooker Maxflows look impressive. Might try some on my daily driver....

                        Re: some muffler test info

I've got a set of FlowMaster 50's under my '62 stationwagon and they sound real sweet. But that must be because of all the carbon that's inside of them.
I recently also put a set under my '65 300 convertible, but wow what a difference when these mufflers are still new! Under this car they sound really metallic and loud. I had a set of Dynomax mufflers under the convert first, but I found their idle-noise was just a little too loud for the car.
I'm thinking of richening the carb so the new Flowmasters carbon-up real fast and their sound will change for the better

The SpinTech's look promising from your description.
