    The capacitor is there to reduce noise in the AM band on the radio, as far as I know. The regulator and alternator need to be grounded, but as long as they are mounted securely to real metal, without too much rust/paint, they shouldn't need a separate ground wire. you can add one if you want but it probably won't help unless the truck is a rust heap or it's all been painted with epoxy paint or something.

      Okay, so I put in the electronic regulator and immediately hit 14.4 volts at idle. Good deal. Thing is, the plugs don't match. The plug from the ol' parts truck doesn't either. Right now they are jammed together and held by a "field expedient device." As long as I keep the hood closed, maybe no one will ask what the piece of pink nylon string does. Town trip tomorrow. Maybe NAPA has a plug that fits.

        Huh. Took the old regulator apart. I suppose having the points burned off on one side and the other being nearly locked up may have had something to do with the problem.
