  • Warped metering plate - Holley 4160

    OK, trying to rebuild the two BJ/BK Holley 4160's for my '68 Mustang, and it's not going well. The latest issue is that I've got a metering plate that's badly warped. It's marked 34R-2007'B, there's a 13 stamped in the middle, and there's a little 2 above the part number.

    What do I do for a replacement? Those numbers didn't match up to anything I saw on eBay. Is there a cross reference somewhere for the jet sizes?

    I'm half tempted to give up on these carbs and get a new set, but they're $1100 a pair. Or take off the dual quad setup and put a single four in it's place, but that's not going to be cheap either. Aarrrgh!!

    Talk to our BS brother down in Indy - speedjunkie, he has piles of parts and does a top notch job rebuilding/ restoring vintage stuff.

      I ordered a pair of AED's adjustable metering plates that use jets instead of being drilled, and found a post on the FE forum that said the #13 plate equates to a #64 jet, so I ordered 4 of those too. Now I'll be able to tune it if necessary.

      Hopefully I won't find any more damaged parts, but these carbs are 49 years old. Fingers crossed.

        Will it have room without turning them sideways now? Metering plates are thicker and the old tunnel rams they would not fit front to back

          No, these just replace the metering plate with a billet aluminum version that accepts jets. It looked like it comes with a new float, probably clearanced for the jets.

          I know what you're talking about though, but I'd call that a metering block, and if I converted to those, there's no way they'd fit on the manifold inline.

            FE engines with dual quads mount the carbs backwards, and they have to be model 4160s with the metering plate in the secondary side in order to clear the distributor. The metering plates are readily available from Holley but the billet mini-block with changeable jets is the better solultion. Double check for float clearance - sometimes they'll clear fine when first assembled but they get closer once you change jets and retighten that gasket a couple times.

              The black plastic looking nitrophil(sp?) floats can be carved on for clearance and then sealed with laquer based nail polish in your choice of fashion colors or whatever the wife/g/f won't miss.
