I only built one 454 BBC 66 Chevelle (early chassis with smaller engine bay) BBC is a tight fit (bunt as bad as Nova)
Oval port heads ported by (the late) Kay Sissell (30 degree intake seats)
Jones hyd short duration high lift cam
reasonable compression- with tight quench (.030)
worked really well on the street (was T400 auto trans with just a Transgo shift Kit and B&B converter (that's braised and bearings)(and balanced)big cooler with 1/2 inch lines)
I've used lots of T`10's and super T10s and they will not hold up to racing with a big block, neither will the stock rear end
Muncies are getting really expensive and they do not hold up that well either
If handling is a concern an Iron BBC is heavy
Suspension needs a rework with pieces from Global West (San Bernadino Ca) or similar
Brakes also need an upgrade if you are going to push it
(you can run 14" rotors with 17" wheels
Doing it today I'd go with the much lighter modern motor, EFI, inverse radius hyd roller cam from Jones, beehive springs, pocket port the heads (high ratio rockers if available, Viton seals)
-less expensive to build and make (surprisingly to me given the funny ports) great power
you still have to spend money on suspension, brakes, wheels if you are going to drive it on twisty roads or mountains
Use only genuine Dana Spicer U-joints or have AAA
Use a smaller high torque starter- the big ones are a real pain to change
