What is a good leak-down percentage? I'm searching/researching that answer on my own but wouldn't mind (would actually like) comments from this group.Last edited by 68scott385; August 3, 2013, 06:49 PM.

THIS THREAD MIGHT PROLLY SHOULD OUGHTA BE MOVED TO THE PROJECT SECTION?
I ran the motor again. Took a hot compression test, numbers 6@140, 2@145. Then I did a leak-down test, 12%-20% leak-down, so it's got some age on it, she still runs better than the motor in the car, RIP. 2@12%, 1@14%, 2@16%, 3@20% no two are adjacent. This time (running) I put a coolant system pressure tester on the radiator to check the running pressure of the engines cooling system, it never got over 10psi but I couldn't keep the temperature controlled either. That was using a 3-core stock radiator, the water pump that came with the motor, a 180* thermostat, and 12v electric fan with better airflow than the one that keeps my 385 cool.
I have since removed the thermostat and check its operation and while it works fine I am going to replace it with a high flow 160* unit. I got a new, heavy load water pump, and a 4-core radiator. I plan to back flush the block as best I can before running the motor again. Other things keep taking priority.

Thanks.
I still need to get the new radiator hooked up and try again to keep it cool on the stand. If I am successful in that I think I'm going to drop it in the car as it is, plus an oil change.
It's got a new water pump and lower temp thermostat already installed but somehow other priorities keep popping up.Last edited by 68scott385; August 18, 2013, 09:55 AM.

I was able to run the 455 for 20 - 30 minutes without it overheating today. New water pump, 160* thermostat, 4-core radiator, and I used a house fan once it got to 210*. The house fan dropped the temp 10* for a few minutes before it climbed back to 210*. The system pressure never got over 7psi until I shut the motor off, then it only went to 10/11psi. I put 3.5 gallons of water in the thing before starting it and another half gallon when the thermostat opened. All this on water, no antifreeze whatsoever. I'm thinking that with 50% coolant the temp should be maybe 10* cooler and overall, with a mechanical fan & shroud instead of the 16" electric on the stand, and limited stop-light driving, I might be able to make this live in the wagon, if it'll fit.

You can ask real nice ... Mr. Admin, can you please move this to the Project Car section?
A 455 should fit, 500 cad's fit and they are dimensionally bigger I believe. It may well sit on the same motor mount position.Flying south, with a flock of bird dogs.
