  • Carbed / hei-ed 95 LT1 Deceleration exhaust explosions (sounds like a 12 gage )

So, the above is what I got. It was running poorly off idle to 1800 rpm till I noticed I hadn't plugged the big vac on the back of the carb. While it was like this it didn't bang threw the exhaust. Now that it is the car runs better and idles better. I was wondering, did this throw my vac. advance to far forward. Now I know your thinking, just stick a timing light on it. But here is the rub, There isn't a timing mark on the balancer since it didn't need one as it had a crank sensor. So, do I need to advance it or retard it?

I was just watching a cleaning of optical spark lt1

does your lt1 have that? 1992-1997.

the vid said the hoses were for vapor evac..no advance on optical. Speed of light does not need it apparently.

anyway, I pop too, it is air bypass related.. if you can retard it pretends to do away with the perfect problem.
else, you can go to injection, all for airbypass, big plenum..although they got those popping too today. Aboiding the bypass keeps a race engine right on edge, they don't care about pops.

I do, and you seem to care as well. Come down slower off throttle in neighborhoods or wherever the concern is.(that is what I do)

    edit:
woops, "hei-ed", gotta pay attention more at 1 in the morning.

Do you still have a functioning air pump on the engine? Carb engines with air pumps have a decel diverter valve to prevent that-EFI engines don't need them.

EGR ? My Monza would do that every now and then (sound like a bomb), the EGR was badly plugged and dysfunctional.

You still have the hipressure electric fuel pump right? do you have a bypassing regulator like a holley 12-803bp that sends fuel back to the tank? the oem fuel pump will overwhelm a 'normal' regulator like a holley 12-803.

First, find TDC, bolt on or make a pointer and mark it on your balancer. There's no way to know what's going on with the timing otherwise.

I was just going to retard the timing today but I got hit with a ton of stuff after I got home. I have A low pressure Mr Gasket electric pump, I do have a pretty good exhaust leak since I've about blown the exhaust off a couple times. When I stabbed the distributor in, it was straight up. Then I twisted it for what sounded best and didn't run on after I shut it off. I'm thinking since I elimiated the vacuum leak, it is way advanced. I guess we'll see tomorrow. Thanks for the interest.

you need to be able to set the timing. I wouldn't even run it until you set up a simple pointer. Find TDC with the coat hanger method, or a piston stop if you want it to be very accurate. Make a mark on the balancer with a paint pen, and one on the timing cover or whever to match it. You need both the timing and the phasing to be right, it's probably phasing that's wildly off causing your big exhaust backfire.

The community POS a bunch of us freshman college kids bought would backfire when you hit the clutch. Broken exhaust pipe. The more you revved it, the louder the bang.

DG, I'm just a backyard ,redneck,engine/trans swaper so you threw me on the phasing thing . But I assumed you were talking about the turning the distributor to retard or advance the initial timing. Especially since I put it in dead on when I put it in. Amy way I decided since it was idling so slow, it probably needed turned counter clock wise or advanced. Yep, that did it. Wound it up to 5 grand and let it compression brake back to 1000. No boom. All is good and it seems faster by my butt dyno and seems to rev quicker. Thanks all, case closed.
