there are still bands in the transmission, there is no adjustment, sounds like they are worn down and not stopping the drum..

Do you drop the pan to change the fluid or is their a drain plug? you should see clutch and band material in the pan and hopefully just a few metallic pieces.

I've just changed the filter & fluid and found nothing out of the ordinary . I'm thinking it's worn out but I wanted some other opinions .

the vibration bit makes me think u-joints too... or carrier bearing if it has a two piece with a carrier or what's the "Cardigan" story? I don't have mine here to look at, but it's an extra cab so not sure they would be the same?

Yes sir I sure did , when Mr4speed menctioned about sound traveling along the driveshaft it made me think . It wasn't the dif but close enough . In testing , I warmed up the trans , opened the door , listened , put the trans into gear and " clank " coming from the back end and prayed please don't be the dif . Cheap fix $27 one Moog u-joint . Thanks again friends

Yup, 100% classic bad u-joint symptom.
                        Escaped on a technicality.

Wow , what a difference ! . Such a smooth ride now . I guess as the u-joint was wearing out the ride was getting worse each day .

I think Bob is trying to say the rest of the ujoints, namely the one on the trans end... given the condition of the one at the axle end... it is probably not far from going out.
