The double dumb part of this deal is that they were only about 0.007" different - just enough to not work. Dumb......
Another bit of Benz stupidity - the input shaft fit in the pilot bearing inner requires that you FORCE the trans up to the back of the block (well, actually the intermediate plate but that's ANOTHER layer of dumb). Then I couldn't get the tailshaft to spin freely. I dawned on me to tap the output shaft forward with my lead hammer - problem solved. Evidently this makes the input shaft enter the pilot bearing properly.
