I'm considering a Hot Rod with a 413 Mopar and I know absolutely nothing about that motor. Does anyone have any pros or cons on that particular engine???
It's a motor with a great history, but it's impractical. Sort of like building a 265 ci small block Chevy.
For the same package size, you can build a 440 a WHOLE lot cheaper, slap 413 Max Wedge stickers on the valve covers and nobody will be the wiser.
What kind of condition is the engine in if its already done, should be a fun car, there were a few guys out here rnning them in old chryslers, they were pretty strong runners....I think the one had the cross ram intake on it....If it needs built... I agree that a 440 would be a better route...parts are availible, should cost less to build....
The problem is no-one makes affordable AND suitable pistons for these engines. If you want pistons, you either have to forged pistons, or you're stuck with stone-age 7.5:1 cr slugs, cast by Goliath himself it seems.
I've written an email to KB-pistons twice in time already, asking them if they have any plans in offering pistons for these forgotten, no, "ignored" bigblock engines from Mopar. But simply said "no, not really."
I'm willing to bet if only one pistonmaker steps up to the plate and starts putting out a number of affordable pistons with 'modern-day' compressionratios for the 413 engine, this engine will be start to become more popular and more interesting to use.
Especially since 440s are becoming slightly harder to find at times in certain areas aswell.

haven't seen the actual car - - only pics - - - the 413 is sitting in a yeller 33 Ply Coupe (a weak Milner attempt at best) and I had no knowledge of the motor is why I was asking.
I got a std. bore '65 413 block in a package deal with my '70 Barracuda. I've tried selling it cheap, and had no takers. I might try taking it to one more swap meet, but it seems like I'd probably have a hard time giving it away. Anybody wants it for free, let me know. I'm guessing it still makes more sense to find a 440 because the parts are readily available, even with a free block. I just can't bring myself to scrap a perfectly good block yet.
The 413 is an RB big block mopar, same family as the 426 and 440, so a lot of parts will interchange. There was a high performance 413 Max Wedge version that had a cross ram and big port heads and lots of compression. Those are pretty cool, but rare.
Here's a website with info and specs on the big block mopars.
arias , venolia , diamond , je , ross could whip up 413 pistons in a heartbeat a higher price the hyped up kb pistons , but , the performance would be worth it
I also have two 413's in parts, and one still in service in my '62 wagon.
All of them need rebuilding but I'm not going to spend twice as much on pistons then I 'need to' for a non-performance engine, so these blocks will gather some more dust in my garage as long as no pistons are available for it yet.
I think it's just a matter of time before some pistonmaker finally will see the light and find out about this 'gap' in the market... ;)
I know a guy who has a long ram intake set up for a 413...linkage...carbs...correct exhaust manifolds etc...of course....it's PRICEY !!! :o...you could damn near buy an Indy-1 set up heads and all for what he wants for that set up.
The Beatings will continue until MORALE IMPROVES !!!!
