Keep lots of band-aids handy ;D

I tape the cut, use a thin cut-off disk in a die grinder to chop the hose, lube the end and the fitting with oil. I cut some 1" aluminum angle for use as "vice jaws" and clamp the receiving fitting in that, then work the hose in. Some days are diamonds, some stone - nothing like screwing up $50 in fittings in one shot to piss ya off.

I just did a lot of AN hose ends for the Bonneville car, and I found by far the best assembly lube I've ever used: Justice Bros. white-lithium grease. Seriously, it's really good.

I don't know what all this talk is about greasing the fittings, but I have never greased the hose or the fittings when putting the lines together. For me they just push right on.
