Keep lots of band-aids handy ;D
I tape the cut, use a thin cut-off disk in a die grinder to chop the hose, lube the end and the fitting with oil. I cut some 1" aluminum angle for use as "vice jaws" and clamp the receiving fitting in that, then work the hose in. Some days are diamonds, some stone - nothing like screwing up $50 in fittings in one shot to piss ya off.
