  • TH400 trouble

My buddys TH400 work fine except for the 2-3 shift at full throttle. It doesn't engage 3rd and bounces off the limiter. When you let off the throttle it goes into gear. Just cruising it works fine.

    Any Ideas?

Hard to say for sure exactly what part of the direct clutch system went south, but it'll have to come apart to find it. Doesn't take much to smoke the clutch pack with that kind of power.

Sounds like the direct clutch is smoked.

The trans guy says he'll fix it for $500, unless he finds some big suprise inside. I told my buddy to do it. Hopefully it'll be back on the road in a couple days.

We need to get to the strip at least once before he breaks it again. We're making a lot of power for a stock block and a trans without any billet parts.

So the trans guy says the clutches aren't that bad but there's a lot of junk in the pan, so the converter is broken.

The converter guy says the converter ok becausethe car wouldn't go at all if it was broken.

Then the trans guy says he never saw the junk because his son took it apart, but the converter is still bad.

I said have the guuy rebuild the trans, have the converter cut the converter apart and see what's what, weld it back up and put it together.

            What do you guys say?

Was the center support bolt tight when the trans guy or his son took it apart?

                Re: TH400 trouble

I don't know. He just said junk in the pan and the direct clutch pack was a little worn. I'll see what I can find out tomorrow.

What would happen if it was loose?

it would lose pressure to the direct clutch.

                      Re: TH400 trouble

I chased that problem for a while on mine, the case was worn where the center support fits into it, and the bolt would not stay tight, and it liked smoking 3rd.
