I'd take the ground to the battery.

So just put the ground on the battery post? And to hook it to the alternator should I just put it behind the big bolt on the back of the unit? Or something else.

X2. The body is a terrible ground.

I just noticed my dist. (unilite) is grounded to the firewall too. Should I move that ground as well? Does it matter where?

You should always return the ground via a wire.

So I should have another wire going from the ground at the firewall going to the chassis?

Surely if you power up from the alternator, you only need ground in that vicinity not the battery.
Mine is set up that way, has been for a long time, and functions perfectly.
If you have a separate chassis isīnt it necessary to connect body, motor and chassis with a ground cable ?
