  • Can anyone tell me what kind of 4 speed this is?

This came out of a buddy's 64-65 Chevelle. It had a strange shifter that mounted to the floorboard of the car. I'm pretty sure it wasn't orginal for the car. I thought it was a Saginaw, but I can't find it on any of the I.D. charts. The reverse is in an unusual location. I'd planned on using it to replace my blown up Saginaw, but my shifter will not work and I'm not having any luck finding one that will fit it.

It has the following numbers cast into it:

    tailshaft

    9X 2480

    C-15402

    case

    OC-15390

    serial # pad

    2950 12193

Sure, it's that wonderful Mopar A833 overdrive transmission that fits into Chevy trucks. Neat item....Brad54 will be bugging you about it, probably....

NP 440. GM's version of the A833OD. I have one in the Impala. Love it. Near the same gear ratios as an 700R4.

I think the JB weld on the reverse shift shaft housing is optional though.

I had one in a pickup I had during high school.

A 2wd short bed 82 Chevy C10. It had a very mild small block.

The throws were kinda long if memory serves correct.

I didn't see that at first. Should make taking the side cover off interesting.

Brian I bet the throws were long with the original shifter. I still have it, but it's way too big to use in a car.

the rpm drop would be pretty long too! I wonder if that's what he meant?

I thought that was a big wad of RTV... but I just checked, JB weld! I've ruled out this tranny anyway. I'll keep looking for another Saginaw to get me by until I can save up for a Muncie.

                Thanks for the help guys!

Hey Jim, well you're right about the RPM drop, the thing went off a cliff going into 4th gear (o/d). When I first had the truck it had some deep highway gears in it and a tired 305. It didn't make near enough grunt toget any use out of the O/D on hilly Massachusetts highways. When I put the new motor in and swapped a decent set of gear into the rear end, life was a lot better,

The earlier post was talking about the physical length of the throws of the shifter as well, granted it was in a pickup with a bench seat so it was a long ass curved handle.

When I first mocked up the tranny with the original shifter. I thought it was kinda cool old Nascar big shifter look until I shifted it into reverse (left and back) the shifter hit me in the gut. Not cool.

                      You are correct Sir!
                      Third gear is 1:1, 4th is .72:1.

If you wanna get rid of it, let me know. I've got one in my daily driver '62 Suburban, and have another I canibalized for parts. I wouldn't mind putting that parts trans back together.

With 3.42 gears in the Suburban, it drives pretty nice. That's coming off 3.55 gears with a Granny 4spd.

Nothing like cruising at 70 mph at 1900 rpm.
