Just sitting here wondering what it take t reverse the operating direction of an engine.Do you need to get a different cam . What all does it take.

Depends on the motor. Ones with a crank driven oil pump like an L36/67 or a lot of other late model motors wouldn't work at all without an external oil pump.
If you swapped the timing gear with no idler or got rid of a chain and went straight gears it would work with a standard distributor. If you kept the chain you'd have to reverse the bevel on both the cam and the distributor to get it to to rotate conventionally which I could only see the purpose of is to drive the oil pump.Central TEXAS Sleeper
