    Re: TINY SBC

Ooh,OOh, Mr Cotter, Mr Cotter! Another goofy engine that would do well in the small engine but still affordable line is the marine 3.7 ford. It uses the same parts as a 460 for but with an aluminum 4 cyl block. Now bolt on a Kaase P51 head and let her fly!

Too bad you gotta stay sbc.

BTW I believe the short deck sbcs at 8.200 using an aurora bellhousing. That was what we used on the pro stock trucks.

I drove a lakester to 170mph with one of those motors... kind of bitchen looking... not bad power... different then a SBC and tough to make it work well...

        Re: TINY SBC

The reason those toyota and Nissan 6 cylinder inlines stay together under ungodly boost levels is that the are well engineered using every modern technique (CAD, finite element analysis etc). Chevys little small block was designed in the early 50's using slide rules.

And a stock 350 block and crank will take 2-3 times stock HP reliably in a drag race application. I know several 1000hp turbo cars running a stock 350 blocks, and one crazy guy is using a stock steel crank. They all run alky for safety however - one run with detonation and I bet those stock blocks would split open like a watermelon hit by a bus.

What is the car platform we're talking about here for the Production class?

Those are production blocks. I walked in the door presuming you'd want a low-deck block. I don't think GM still services es the low-deck, small-bore Bow-Tie blocks, but I could be wrong.

Does a stock 267 block have super-thick cylinder walls, or are they thin like a 305?

              Re: TINY SBC

I have a set of SBC raw head castingings #14011049 that I was going to do a small bore motor. Now these are the raw castings, no valve guide holes, pushrod holes or valve seats. I paid $200 each for them and would sell them for that price. I can take a picture and send it to you. I gcan't figure out how to post a picture on this forum. Doug Odom in big ditch

From the 2006 Chevy Performance Parts Catalog:

                        p/n 24502650
8.350 deck (as of 10/03) and can be machined to 8.2 deck height.
                        p/n 12480050
8.700 deck height and can be machined to 8.5 deck height.

Even though they are listed I have no idea on availability.

                              Salt Fever,
I hear that most of the old "Chevrolet" IRL motors are still available. The last ones are 3 liter, 180 inches. I know a guy that bought two of them, pan to injector, complete and fresh for $3K a piece!!! Now that would be a good piece to start with. If you just ran it "stock" you could make a 100 passes on the long course at B'ville before you needed to look at it!!

Even if you did all of the mods to make a SBC down to 180 inches you would not be able to take advantage of the short stroke as the rpm limit would still be controlled by the valve train. If you have ever seen the Bean Bandits modified roadster, they run a 1/2 SBC but they run the complete block with a flat head Ford head on the side that doesn't have pistons. I will bet that they also don't run a special crank, I'll bet it's a standard crank with a counter weight taking the place of the rod and piston for the empty cylinder. Anyone know??
