Its an OK block. The 509 casing is the best.

I would price out the Motown or Little M blocks. They generally come out about the same cost as purchasing and then fully prepping a stock 400 block for serious use.

Deck plugs, short fill, splayed main caps, align boring, sonic testing, etc can add up fast.

if its only got 2 freeze plugs on the side of the block its the better of that casting
      why you ask?
because the webbing in the block is noticeably thicker.
I seen it compared with other 400 blocks and it seems to be true.
      but have them sonic tested!
oh here is my new 406 with 3030817 block (high nickel) same as the 509

My 817 block has been a trooper this season. It pushed a 3600lb sonoma to 11.50 on motor and 10.87 on a 150hit. No fill or fancy machine work either.

I like to push my luck though i ran the last 3 seasons on a stock 7.625" diff

The 509 casting is the one with two freeze plugs. The 817 has three.
