  • 273 4 speed crank

I discovered that the early 273 4 speed crank that was in my 340 block wouldn't allow my 727 tranny to mate up to it.
This happened of course after everything was all together.
The converter hub will hit the end of the crank at approx. 1/2 inch to bolt up.
I had to pull the engine apart and get the crank machined to allow the hub to clear.
All the local Mopar people i talked to didn't know about this potential problem.
I thought the crank was the original, that came with my '68-340 when i bought the block and crank as a used package
Finally i discovered this mystery when i talked to a long time Moparian.
A word of advice would be to dry fit your converter to the crankshaft prior to installation.

works the other way too, some cranks are not drilled for the pilot bushing...

Also there were different size pilots on auto trans converters, and for more fun the input shaft spline count changed in the mid-late 60s.

I have no real experience with smallblocks and their differences, but I suppose you made sure the convertor is Really seated properly in the transmission right?

I know what you mean about test fitting, mating a 5-speed manual to a Buick 455 with mechanical clutch linkage, I needed to make sure the Block had the hole for the clevis pin drilled and tapped (so far both 455's and the 231 I checked were) and that the service replacement crank I got was set up for a pilot bushing, which I checked well after I bought it and luckily it checked out, as it was an after thought. Wouldn't have guessed that there would be problems like that with an auto trans, that's good to know for future reference. Thanks for sharing.
              Escaped on a technicality.

Yes i made sure the converter was locked into the tranny.
Which sometimes can be a chore to get it right.
Now after a couple of years, the tranny is leaking quite badly.
I am guessing its the front seal.I went through the other options like the dipstick O ring, pan gasket
As well as the speedometer cable seal and the shifter linkage seal.
I had heard about auto. trannys and the converter fluid slowly draining down and dripping out.
But the large amount of fluid thats under my car is pointing to the seal,so out it comes.
Oh well, i wanted to put a higher stall converter in anyway.

Sorry you had to find out the hard way. There have been many posts on forabodiesonly.com and Moparts. The 273's are a good source for cranks

Must be an early 273 crank. I think 66 and earlier had a smaller bushing bore.

I have a 69' 273 and the converter from it went right into the 340 that replaced it.

I have a crank out of a early 69 block and it has the small 904 register.
