  • Stupid HEI question....

So ive got dads HEI ready to go in his 70' chevelle in hopes of firing the old 350 up. Its a 85 series Mallory unit. My question is this. On the distributer theres 3 connection points. Battery +, coil -, and a ground strap plug in for locations. Am I right to assume that
    1. I hook up the ground to a ground source
    2. I hook up the Battery + to the 12v ignition source that was originally hooked up to the + side of the old stock coil.
    3. Now heres my question. What exactly does coil - go to?

    Re: Stupid HEI question....

You don't want to connect the old points wire that went to the positive side of the coil to the HEI positive side. It's a resistor wire, not full 12 volts. You need to run a wire from a ignition hot source from the fuse block to the pos. connection of the HEI dist.

The coil - of the HEI is for your tach.

Make sure the ground strap is connected to the cap in coil. Then a good ground source from the cap.
