Trying to figure our if I need just a couple of the bearings, the master kit, or just get a whole new rear axle.... if I found a good one the later maybe the easiest.

Pulled the carrier out. Pinion sounds ruff. The carrier bearings have a lot of play. Is it SOP to just replace pinion bearings or at this point should I go for a master overhaul / replace unit. In stead of trying to cheap out.

The rear in my 'Stang was noisy from the time I got it. I replaced the gear set, bearings, etc. and set it up as carefully as I could though it was my first time inside an 8.8. Anyhow, the noise was still there and unchanged from before the overhaul. Then I found the Turbo Coupe axle that's in there now and it's fine. No clue what was making the racket. BTW - your videos were marked "private" for me.

Thats a bummer, spend the time and money to fix and still end up replacing it. I would like to over haul it for the experance. I have done a few remove and replace, but never set up or replaced bearings. Finding a good used one can be done but these don't grow on trees like the 4 lug fox rear ends. On CL they are 250-500 on car-part they are 400-650 I will have 2-3 hours in drive and $40-50 in fuel to go pick on up.. Like most things I do I sure I will end up doing this more that once.
Dan, I tried to make the videos public

When we built JWS4621's 8.8, the standard pinion shim set the pattern very nice, but we did need to play with the side shims some to get the backlash within spec.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

disk brake 8.8 mustang rears are rare in the you pull its around hear and they go quick. Explorer rear will not bolt in and its just as much (or more) to switch the insides to the mustang axle. I will keep the stock gear so hopefully it goes back together easy. Looks like I am going to be buying some tools to get the old bearings off.
