  • injector bungs

    I am installing injector bungs on a older aluminum intake manifold. The bungs can be tig welded or epoxied. I don't have a tig welder and would like to use Locite Epoxy weld bond?

    How well did it work??

    would you do it again??

    I personally would like to know Nick Smithberg's opinion. I'm likely to rough up the bungs surface and use JB weld on my IRON intake with aluminum bungs. I'll eventually do aluminum on aluminum and haven't decided on the epoxy.

      E-85 eats at splashgaurd so I would be welding them in, dont ask me how I know ....................................

        I used JB Weld to do the one's in the Ranger. I would definitely rough them up or cut some grooves with something so the epoxy has more mechanical "bite". I had 2 come loose and had to re-epoxy them and they were fine afterwards. I did not rough them up but should have.

          I would machine thread the two, or pipe thread it maybe.

            Pipe threaded bungs would make it too dang easy.

              I don't recall seeing that before James, that is a pretty slick setup that I'll have to remember when I go to convert a V8 intake over!


              Pipe threads, hmmm, I have some pretty large pipe taps, I wonder if I can get suitably large dies? That would be TOO easy.

                What's the OD on the bungs. I have a set of H-F NPT taps and dies that should be workable just eyeballing the size of the injectors and your bungs that you had. The tap part would be easy, the die on the bung would be hard I'd think with the stepped shoulder potentially running into the die before you cut any sort of decent threads on it. I guess if you were epoxying them in that wouldn't matter as it would just serve as a way to keep it in place while the epoxy cured.

                Interesting thoughts I'll have to keep in mind if I do a Nailhead or the call of those 1926 Buick I6's gets too strong and I drag them home.

                      The 3/4" hole.


                      And the bung drops right in.

                        The od of the bungs are 7/8" the ID is .550 . Taping is out of the picture.

                        I have a smooth finish on the bungs I guess I will have to rough them up. James did you use the high temp 400 degree JB weld or the standard 300 degree you see in the stores?

                            Finally got to dig out my good calipers and the tap set.

                            1/2in NPT tap has a maximum external diameter of 0.855in but the range I've actually used on it is closer to 0.820in.
                            1/2in NPT die has a maximum internal diameter of 0.765in and a minimum ID of 0.735in.

                            Sounds like they might work but good luck getting the die started on the bung and keeping it straight by hand.

                              This right here would be your best option if welding isn't an option. Epoxy can work too but threads holding it in place would be much better.
