as i figure out not only what i'm going to do with the car, but also what i'm going to bring along, i got to thinking about what tools i should bring, what i should definitely not bring and some sort of "absolute essentials list" of things i can't live without.
so, i figured i'd ask. what 3 things in your toolbox/trailer/trunk would you say are non-negotiables. these would be things you absolutely could not do without. please don't include tire changing tools as that's sort of a given. so lets hear it!

flashlight and extinguisher are not in my toolbox/trunk, they're in the car where I can get to them.
I bring a lot of crap I don't need, and usually don't have what I do need. Extra spark plugs are nice to have, as well as any oddball parts that you can't find at a parts store, are like to go bad, and other racers won't have. I have no idea what those would be, on your car.
Baling wire is my favorite for fixing misc. things that go wrong. Much stronger and stays put better than duct tape or zip ties.

We are about 2 weeks away from baby number 2's due date, so progress is really slowing at the moment on the car and I may be about to a point where i have to stop for a little while, but I'm still pushing forward where I can. This weekend I managed to get the trans crossmember built.
To help reduce costs, yet decrease some of the valvetrain weight, the guys over at Venom Racing Engines suggested we use some LS3 valves, turned down to the size we are going for. I got a message last night (yes, on a Sunday, these guys are awesome!) with this picture of an intake valve chucked up in the CNC lathe. Yeah, I'm getting pretty amped up about the changes.
That's it for the moment. I'm hoping to get some sheet metal work done maybe starting today.

Monday I was home all day with my daughter as her day car provider was out of town this past weekend. I was able to communicate very easily with Venom Racing Engines throughout the day and we hammered out a plan of attack. They found the shortblock was much more wore out than I was hoping for (but knew with the amount of time on the build it could very well be pretty worn). After a morning long brainstorm session via Facebook messenger, emails, and phone calls, the existing cylinder heads and intake were sold and the pistons/rods/crank will be replaced with a stock stroke Molnar Technologies crank and 6.125" rods, and Wiseco came on board to help us get a new set of 13:1 slugs. Thanks again to Steven at Cam Motion, the cylinder heads will be a set of worked over Dart Pro1 ls3's. Those cylinder heads flow 370 cfm out of the box. The cam and intake are secret squirrel stuff so I can't share that just yet, but it will be a low lash solid roller and T&D Shaft rockers will handle the valve action. We will also be making the move to E85. I realize that introduces it's own challenges, but we will improvise, adapt, and overcome.
My head is still spinning a little as I grasp what just happened, lol! Of course this needed to be communicated with C&S Specialties and Black Magic Clutches as both the carb and clutch builds are combo specific. Both of those companies gave a smile and a nod and will be making strides to get those components together as soon as the combo is 100% finalized.
In other news, my PST aluminum driveshaft should be here Thursday, and I'm hoping my new strange axles and spool will be here today.
My wife is now 37.5 weeks pregnant and is obviously miserable, but has been a real trooper. This pregnancy has been more challenging than the last. Everyone is healthy, but I can tell she's not having a good time overall. Progress on the car will likely slow as we transition from having 1 kid to 2 kids in the half. Additionally, I have some side work lined up that needs to be taken care of, as well as my honey-do list that seems to be getting longer rapidly.

I heard there was a football game on this weekend, but I was busy in the garage myself, lol! Most of what I was dealing with Saturday was daily driver boring stuff, and I spent a good bit of time working on a hat order for my Mullet Militia 3rd gen Camaro/Firebird car club.
On of the beautiful things about metal, is that when you screw up, you can go backwards, lol!
I decided making the tunnel removable wouldn't really benefit me. without some sort of sliding transmission crossmember/mount, it was just going to be a real pain to pull the trans from the top, and no matter how i played it, i couldn't get the trans into the car with the shifter attached going in from the bottom, so Plan B was to take shifter off for installation and removal. I'm actually pretty happy with the way this is turning out. Here's the cover I came up with for the shift rods.
Lots of controversy over this, lol. I mocked these up just to get a visual. They'll be a tuning/just-in-case aid and will be removed for some of the street car classes I have my eyes on. I think it's smart protection for my investment personally.
40 spline axles/spool from Strange showed up this week, as did the 3.5"x.120" aluminum driveshaft from PST. I believe the driveline is about as bullet proof as I can afford at this point
That's all for now. I'm going to try to swing by a Harbor Freight this week and grab a sheet metal brake so I can make the shifter box.

well, the new baby showed up friday i'm taking most of the week off to help get acclimated here at the house, and while i'm here i'm going to try to get a few things done, including putting a closet door in, and possibly pulling the transmission from the new mommy-mobile (a 2000 jeep cherokee we picked up for $500 with trans issues). we were very blessed that the delivery went smoothly and quickly (labor was only about 6.5 hours long and she only pushed for 17 minutes). the girls are healthy and happy, albeit very tired. once the wife is recovered and fully transitioned into being a stay-at-home mom, i'll be able to put the racecar and sidework into over-drive and really try to get some stuff accomplished. 2017 is starting off great
