Every time we list the best 5 day averages, which is how Drag Week is won and lost, someone brings up the fact that one bad day messed up their average, or points out that they had their class well in hand so they cruised to victory the last two days. Invariably someone remarks, "The best pass each car turned in for the week is a better gauge of the car's performance potential!"
So we started such a list, and after I published the first or second one, we started getting comments about how people had ran faster the year they fell out on Tuesday or Wednesday, so why wasn't that pass used. Well, quite simply we felt that in the case of a DNF, those numbers aren't valid because finishing is the true test of whether or not you brought a real street car or not. Harsh, maybe...but Drag Week is harsh, the crucible by which the cars and crews are measured is to finish, and collect that 6th time slip. In no way do I mean to diminish the efforts of those who didn't finish, or invalidate the times they ran, I'm just explaining how this list was constructed.
