  • Drag Week 2012 No Shows???

How many Keyboard Junkies wont make the call??? The last two years I have pre-registered a week before the race, with no problems. Looks like some people that talked about showing up last year are still building the same cars, and have pre-registered?? I think Hot Rod might be busy with those refunds!!!

I think Hot Rod was surprised by last years turn out. Do we know how many people pre-registered last year? ~177 people actually teched/entered on the first day last year. 150 pre-register?
    Escaped on a technicality.

We pre-registered 2 last year, and entered the 3rd the day of the event, and I certainly wasn't the only guy in the barn handing over cash (that came out wrong)!!
They have NEVER came close to filling up, It was 250, then when they talked about new rules, they said 225, then when rules came out 200. Now it's staring them in the face, and you start thinking..."Hmm, 2600 bucks for every ten cars we add, are we really going to turn that money away"??

      We'll see who flinches first!!

Yeah but I think last year was a good indicator as to just how many cars they can run through in the allotted time. The rain delays really put the squeeze on them in Tulsa. It's a fine line between car count and making everybody mad because there isn't enough time for everyone to make a couple of passes.

I pre-registered just before the cutoff last year, my number was 137. So I would say approximately 35 cars registered the first day at the track.

My money is on people being able to register at the event even if it gets to be 204 or 210 or something. We're headed into uncharted territory at this point and while amusing at the end of the day we all have to get our junk to Tulsa before it'll matter.

I'm sure they have a typical percentage of no-shows in mind and could oversell the preregistrations to account for it. Whatever the case may be, I am super excited about this year and seeing all you knuckleheads again.

Some cars take way more thought out engineering than others. Yep, I'm one of them and plan on being there but shit happens. I'll pre-register anyways, until I show up, because I can...

Ok, James I'll take the bait.

Last year was NOT a good indicator of how many cars they can run in an alloted amount of time...
It was a good indicator of how quickly things can go awry without a good plan in place, and a full staff to implement it.

I pulled out my old run sheets from NHRA divisionals, with experienced 10.90 drivers and a full staff:

                      Oct 7 2007 Elimination Round 1 Start 7:57 AM 47 cars End 8:26 AM
                      APR 20 2007 Q1 Start 8:45 AM 55 cars End 9:07 AM
                      Oct 5 2007 Q1 Start 8:51 AM 46 cars End 9:10 AM

So, better than a set a minute is doing extremely well...even if we could accomplish this that's 120 cars an hour. Do the math, if the track is only available for 4 hours, that's 2 hits per car, roughly. Burnouts across the starting line effectively triples the amount of time per set, by the way.
If we are going to make 200 cars plus work, it's going to take a concerted effort on everyone's part...Racers, track, DW staff, DW Volunteers, ETC.
First, we need to break the cars into groups of 40 or so, either by class or speed and assign a run order, and bring up each in order. That way people aren't spending all thier time in the lanes, they can work on thier cars or watch, or talk to others, knowing when they will be called up. These groups will be numbered on day 1 and the order followed from then on..If you are a "1" (13.00-up DD) You know you need to be at the track when the gate opens. If you are a "4" you can relax knowing you aren't getting a hit in the first hour.

As time winds down, say the last hour, an extra lane would open up for disttressed competitors who have not made a pass.
I've raced a Divisional with 984 competitors. I've seen how the best Division Directors make it work. This will reduce congestion around the lanes, it will reduce stress among competitors who feel compelled to work on thier cars in the lanes for fear of not getting a run, and it will allow everyone to enjoy the track time more.

Looks like someone took offense to a general topic about no shows!! Getting your ride completed is just half the battle. Lots of time, and money goes in to working all the bugs out for a five day 1200 mile event. Thats why a lot of us would wait to register till the last few days. With all the attention and promoting of Drag Week, registration being almost full and still 5 months away, just saying we might have a bunch of no shows/ refunds!!

It is one thing for anybody to talk about no shows, but DF also gut checked the Unlimited no shows at awards last year and that is what fired me up. Nothing towards you, but I try to be a man of my words. Regardless, if I can get everything ironed out on my Duster, it will not be a pretty sight.

I guess I should have qualified that by saying "under their past operating procedures". More organization would most certainly streamline the process and group class cars up so the scenerio of an unlimited car and a 15sec DD running together would not happen.

I've said it once and I'll say it again.... Vote MoparBilly for race director! vote soon and vote often!!
