  • Help out a DW newbie

2012 will be my first Drag Week. I’ve wanted to participate for
years, and am finally in a position to be able to go. I’m already
registered (#1757) and busy prepping my car for the DD class.
I'm by no means new to the drag strip, but wanted some pointers about DW.
What are some tips from the experienced guys?
Will there be a list of host hotels?
What things should I be sure to do or not do?

You will have the time of your life and be ADDICTED. Talk to a veteran and find out what you need but more impotantly how to think. Its all about friends, and you just finishing. It will seem like one long day and everything works out.

You will need to drive your car and work out all of the little bugs. They will bit you in the middle of BFE and you will wish you fixed it at home. Make sure there is no over heating issues, or VAPOR LOCKING problems (This was my excitement last year). Beleve me when I tell you you will drive you car in some extream conditions.
Bring any thing that is special to your car (thats why my car is usually packed with spare parts)
A few weeks before I leave on DW I uasally check over all of the wheel bearing, breaks, U joints, stearing and suspension parts,
all of the fluids, cap, rotor, plug wires, plugs, change all of the filters,.
Bring any tools that you might be spical to your car. you can usuall barrow regular tools for fellow DW's if you dont have them.
Beware of Jake he likes Tiquila and he will hold you down and force feed it to you!

Make sure the Valve train is up to snuff, lifters springs, rockers. Make sure fuel filters are clean and bring spares. The Host Hotels are nice some of the others will be full of guys in the parking lots. Most of the time you will find a group on the road or before you will just fit into. Get as much sleep as you can when you can. Practice getting the car ready for the track and the road. Have any tools needed for that in a special grab bag.

The selection of co-driver is also important. Be sure to tell them that paying for gas and hotels rooms is normal for the co-driver. Tell them that the event is lots of fun and to bring plenty of cash, especially ones, for all of the extra stops you'll be able to make along the way. Also bring a cooler and sandwiches for the veterns as it is tradition that new guys bring sandwiches for the veterns, and beer, and liquor.

Get some drive time on your ride to work out all the bugs "Cooling/ Overheating, Fuel system, Trans issues..."

Save up alot of money for fuel, the gas prices are going to hurt.

Plan on being behind the wheel for 4 to 8 hours between tracks, so bring a cooler for drinks and snacks.

And depending on your combo, any hard to get parts that are not at the local parts store.

I have a 3 ring binder that I keep parts instructions, car wiring diagrams and a "Mustang list" of part numbers for pretty much everything I can think of. That way if I need something, I can just look up what I bought the last time and get it and get out.

If you have an issue, like a blown headgasket (looking at you james) be prepared for a group of people to start working on your car without asking. This is where the previously mentioned, beer, sammichs, strippers come in. Just don't let Jake tighten the carb.

If you have time mark your tubs or boxes with what is in them if they weren't jointly packed by you and your co-driver. If you decide to go the trailer route check all of that stuff too, and if possibel organize the traler in advance. you don't want to doing trailer wiring in parking lot of O'Rielly's Auto Parts at 9 PM the first night. Right Walt?

James, I think I have solved the sammich issue.
