  • Best and worst Drag Week tracks

We all have trcks we liked, and some we don't want to go back to.

One of my favs is Great Bend KS. this place was way cool. On the other end Amerilo was not so great.

    Hands down Gilliam, LA!

The shutdown at Great Bend was so long, you might as well stay in the gas for another 1/8th mile after the finish!

131 sucked, the track guys where over the top, telling Us where to stage the car like they knew what we needed to go quick. 3 days no sleep is not the time to start with me on staging the car.

great bend, tulsa, and gilliam all awesome tracks.

topeka and memphis were the most disappointing tracks i have neen too.topeka wasnt prepped worth crap, and memphis had the worst manager runnin around hollerin stupid orders at all of us.

amarillo is never as bad as it was drag week day...that fault lies with the vp rep.he prepped it.his way...and hell, nothin runs good in our cruddy air,but we are used to it.lol

Yep. My 60 foots in Tulsa & Memphis this year were no better than I normally run at Amarillo. ET's were better, but good air will do that for you.

Gilliam was WAY better than I expected. Too bad we werent there longer. Amarillo was bad due to air but the worst was the loose gravel sticking to slicks and being brought up to staging lanes. I had a rock thrown into my blower belt on my second pass and broke it. Doc Fox has a vent window broken and Bulletproof had windshield cracked. Thats just the 2 broken I know about.
                  Go ahead, pull my finger.

The store-bought "Unknown, Unsponsored, Untuned, Unmodified" left-on-the-HRM-cutting-room-floor Outsider ran best at Gillam and Memphis (if memory serves).

Memphis has the most fun return road. But Memphis is apparently in a dangerous neighborhood and didn't allow camping. But it did have unleaded race gas on-pump.

Gilliam allowed camping but had no unleaded fuel of any kind (bad news if you've run the tank down anticipating a high-octane fill at the track)

Tulsa is nice, had plenty of unleaded race gas available, and is camper-friendly. But the store-bought Outsider didn't lap well there on either day. And they didn't have any souvenir decals.

Texas Motorplex -- while it's always fun to run at a true, solid "national event" track, the "Motorplex" seems kind of antiseptic and soulless. It just didn't have the "grassroots" friendly feel of Gilliam or Tulsa. And it lacked the return road thrills of Memphis. Besides the air's not that spectacular in the middle of North Texas on a hot, Autumn day. Besides, the roads near Ennis are dirty, apparently leading to multiple tire punctures among more than one competitor (including the store-bought Outsider).

Another advantage to Gilliam -- it was the easiest track to pit where you could also see the on-track action (if you're given to that sort of thing)

Since this was my first dw I would say the motorplex was my least fav. I don't like it or heartland park because its difficult to get much spectating in from the lanes. My dad had been to Gilliam before and liked it, he also got to replace an oil pan from a wheel stand there haha.
