  • 2014 Drag Week Scholarship

As an alumni of Freiburger University (affectionately referred to as "F.U." or "Drag Week"), I would like to pay-it-forward a bit and offer a scholarship to DW '14 for an enrolled Freshman (a.k.a. Newbie). The scholarship application requires the following:
1.) You have never been to Drag Week as a participant.
2.) You write a short bit about yourself and your ride on this thread. Give at least your first name and a picture of your ride.
3.) You manage to get registered in the 260-car field and then post your registration number.
4.) Your spouse (or girl/boy friend), Mom and Dad all refuse to let you spend money on something as silly as Drag Week.

I will put all the names that qualify in a hat (about a week after registration opens), then drink a beer or two and select a winner. The winner will receive reimbursement of the registration fee plus $250.00 for gas. I will also reveal to the winner several upperclassmen secrets on how survive DW on a budget (e.g. camp like two-time HotRod winner Tom Dziengel, get free margaritas from SB/NA winner Jake Stelter after he has had too many, don't eat because you feel sick from heat exhaustion...).

    Let the games begin!
    Kerby

I'd have my son enter, but his old man is a total enabler .... and no. 4 would disqualify him

Ummmm. My name is Bob Holmes, I am a road race fanatic and a one time orange cone for a student driver and have never been on DW...... what? don't believe me??

              Ok ok

The truth is my name is Aaron, I live in the upper NW and have an affection for out of the ordinary projects that I like to post frequently about on BangShift.com. I have never been in DW.... what??!?! comeon!!

Seriously, Kerby, this is a freakin awesome thing to do. Maybe you should make the winner wear a tshirt all week with a pic of your face on it just for kicks. Then you could say I wasn't there, but my face was.
Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

                Nice!

If I wasn't such a low-budget cheapskate, I'd offer a cash contingency to Ford-powered racers who run "Ford Drag Team" decals during the event and win their classes . . . .

But then I need somebody to pay me a "contingency" . . . so that idea's out.

I am glad that Kerby's doing such a cool thing to support DW, though.

Happy Motoring! And best wishes to the scholarship applicants . . . .

WOW, this is very kind of you! it seems i meet the criteria, so here it goes:

My name is Matt Walter, I'm an avid street car racing fan and racer. I'm 29 years old and a recent college graduate from a small community college in middle Georgia. My wife and I moved to Maryland back in June 2013 where I was able to get a job as a Technical Service Specialist at an agricultural equipment manufacturing company. My wife is a huge supporter of what I do but we are well aware of the fact that the cost to even get to and from the starting point is pretty far out of reach. Most of our extra money is going towards paying back my large amount of student loans. Drag week has been a bucket list item of mine for a while and is why I put an OD manual trans in the car. I have spent the last few days since the announcement of the tracks devising plans to come up with the money to go. I do have the money set aside already for the registration and have my eyes peeled to the appropriate websites. To keep travel costs down, I intend to bring a tent and sleep at the tracks (so long as the weather isn't terrible, and the tracks allow it.)

My car is a third gen camaro sport coupe street car that's fitted with a budget oriented 370" ls series engine, with a carb and a t56. The combo is still fairly new and my experience behind the wheel of a fast stick shifted car is still pretty limited, but I've managed to go 10.87@127 at near 3500lbs. The car is N/A and fits both of the SB/NA stock suspension class rules. a few small updates that are happening over the winter (mostly in the weight reduction department) should have it closer to the mid/bottom 10 second range. You may remember the car from this Bangshift blog entry:

                    Here is the car:

Thank you for doing this and any consideration of my application!
