  • Saturday Shoot Out rules announced

it's a heads up race for everyone!

HOT ROD is “where it all began,” as the first magazine to cover the hot rod culture. Since that time, HOT ROD has evolved into a brand devoted to everything from hot rods to restomods, barn finds to project cars and everything in between.

Didn't get around to getting a bump box for my turbo stang so I won't be treeing anyone. More like sitting in the beams waiting for boost to come up while the other car is saying good by.

Used to race with a pro tree all the time when I first got started in 1979, now mostly do the 3 yellows....but I figure I can learn it again, we'll have all week, right?

Is the heads up race actually heads up? It is unclear. It says the underdogs have a chance at the big dogs but hardly if it is heads up. Is it a real bracket race? An all run 200+ car bracket race? That's 8 rounds for the win car that just drove 1000 miles. I don't see the heavy metal getting to excited about this race. How is the bye run chosen? Lots of info left out on this epic battle. Is it safe having a 200mph car chasing down a 16 second Durango?

It's called a Heads Up Shootout. That's what heads up means, no handicap. it's not a bracket race.

I had to look up how the Sportsman ladder works. From the NHRA rule book...

"Qualified Sportsman fields use a modified ladder in which the top half of the field is matched to the lower half (1 vs. 17, 2 vs. 18, 3 vs. 19, etc. in a 32-car field)"

If it is truly heads up no one really has a chance against any one of the unlimited cars. It makes no sense to me. My 1/8 mile is what they run in the 1/4. Is it really just a race for the cars that run 200mph? I've been to races like that before. You can pick the winner before the race even starts.

It should be interesting to see what happens. You have to win every round to advance, and there are a lot of things that can go wrong with the quicker cars. Plus they don't seem to have much practice during the week, cutting a good light.

If the suckstang survives the week, I'll give it a whirl. Why not? It's all for fun anyway.

I just hope I make it back to Tulsa still running under my own power to watch the racing Saturday and hopefully participate.

Notice they aren't specifying a turnaround time between rounds. That will level the playing field a bit if it is hot lap only. Also note the "completed drag week".
