I don't know a lot of you, but I know a few of you pretty well, so I figured I'm far enough along now to share what I've been up to.

My wife and I have lived in the same spot for the last 10 years. We love our neighborhood, we have a little land (not much, just an acre), we both have good jobs, and our area is a hotbed for growth (Greenville, SC) so I think we're in our "forever home" and I finally saved up enough to build as close to a dream shop as I can afford to.

I've spent the last 8 years doing a full remodel on our house. That includes a full interior remodel that I did, a new roof/color (contractor installed) a new 16x24' deck I built - I also build the little roof over the window/door in the rear, rebuilt front porch, and I spent 9 months of weekends residing, wrapping, and sealing our house (our average electric bill has gone down $50-75/month depending on month) half of which I hung off of a bucket truck doing the upper levels.

A few before and after of house.

With the wife happy I got my free pass to make this happen. I've been saving for a few years and was able to squirrel away 30K, hopefully a little more than half of what I need. I've priced the remaining materials and labor I need to finish and it should come in around 50-55K (includes a lift install! - WOHOO!)

At this point, my 30K cash is gone, and I'm waiting for our HELOC loan to kick in, but I have something that resembles a shop. 28'x52' with dual front 10x10 doors and a single 10x10 rear door pass through with 7 windows and 2 man doors. We had to dig out one heck of a hill to get started. The bulk of my cost so far has been in the grading/concrete work.

Dang, my pics got reordered... oh well.

Specs: Foundation is 16"x12". Double row of block, two 5x5 pads with rebar for 2 post lift foundation (overkill), and a 5.5" thick slab. It's over 8" thick where the lift will be.

Some pics of the walls going up. Walls are 2x6 with 12' overall height, with the block my ceiling will be just shy of 13'.

And lastly, the trusses went up a few weeks ago. I hired a crane and 3 of my friends came over and we knocked it out in under 5 hours. The weekend rate made it a good bit more $, but well worth $1,300 to get 27 trusses up.

The trusses have a 10' wide x 6' tall storage area built into them. Because I wanted the roof to be safe enough (flat enough) for me to roof, I had to make them smaller than what a legally permitted room can be (6'8") so this area can only ever be used as "attic storage" which is fine, and what I wanted, I have enough toys, etc to keep me busy anyway.

I'm pretty much building this by myself. I hired a contractor to do the grading, foundation, block, and floor work and driveway, That was 17K. I wanted overkill so I went back and drilled/epoxied rebar in each corner, door opening, and every 6' and fully grouted all of the block.

I then added the sill plate and built/raised the walls. That all took me about 2 months.

My friends came over to install the trusses, the truss company didn't show (was not happy, we had some words, and I got a reduced rate for when they did show the next weekend). So, instead of trusses they were awesome enough to help me get most of the sheeting up in just a few hours.

The next weekend the trusses went up and I've been working on fully blocking/bracing them before sheeting goes on.

            I probably won't have a finished roof until Dec/Jan.

I will be doing all of the exterior/siding/roof/shingles/windows and man-doors.

The only work I'll be farming out the rest of the way will be the garage door installs and the electrical (Greenville County requires I use a licensed contractor).

It's amazing I'm already at the 30K mark, but it adds up so fast. The windows and trusses were $, $1,600 and $3,500 respectively. I can't imagine what this would be if I had paid someone to build it. $80, 90, 100K???

Looking good Jesse, just remember DO NOT START USING IT TILL YOUR THROUGH, or like a house you'll never finish.

I've already had that conversation with myself multiple times... I understand it, but I can't promise it won't happen lol.

It did take 8 years to finish the house. I'd like to condense that timeline a little for this project!

But seriously, I do want it 100% done before I use it. I have to have the ceiling up before the doors can go in, so that's a big step. I'm dang near an expert at siding now. This will be cake compared to the house! I'm not expecting it to be done before next summer.

The only exception might be the lift. I have the pads marked out and I'll have power run over to the area. Depends how the money tree looks at the end.

Two vehicles will easily fit on the right (my plan is to put a "work in progress" and my huge silverado on that side. The left side will actually fit 3 shortbed truck/pony car sized vehicles nose to tail. My old garage will house both mustangs. As of now the new garage will have my C10, firebird, and silverado.

Good for you. I know from experience you will never regret building it, especially when you stand under a vehicle to change the oil and filter.
