Your both retired now - rent a BIGGER truck and move it in fewer trips.

Stroker, hotel rooms are always high priced, especially in Deadwood. Making reservations early is always better as with most events. Staying in Deadwood has it's advantages such as the evening activities. WST Doug made a deal with the Cedar Wood Inn in Deadwood, we rented the whole hotel for a week, keep in mind this was considered "off season". Spearfish is a great place and a little cheaper, as well as Sturgis. Hill City is also a great option, keep in mind its an hours drive through the Black Hills and there can be wildlife, elk and deer among other critters in the road at night. There are several options of B&B and VRBO home rentals in the area, some are located off the pavement.

There are some pretty steep grades in the Black Hills, be sure your brakes are in good working order.

Sometimes the scenic routes get congested with people and cars and sometimes buffalo. If you encounter a buffalo in the road, give them space and be prepared to wait them out. Do not get out and try to pet them, that would be a very bad decision with unwanted results. The mules on the other hand are very used to people and cars, lots of people feed them, so they like to see what you might have and will stick their heads in your windows.

Spearfish Holiday Inn 26-30. Jim, you'll like the Best Western, Black Hills Inn, it's a good hotel and the owner is a car guy, also there's a good restaurant next door.

that's a big 10-4 on the brakes --- mine overheated every time we came from the south up to Deadwood on those steeper grades -- rotors overheated and braking was wobbly as heck -- not permanent warping though George.(he diagnosed it over the phone !) lower gear, lower speed, all good. Blackie can't keep up with the Vettes, etc.
