Got my 71 in 2007 or so and it still needs a lot. Currently has a four bolt 350 with a weiand intake and FI tech TBI. Power steering leaks. Had add on A/C at one time. Put a built 200 4r in it from a builder in Florida. 12 bolt rear with Yukon axles. I have an eaton locker to put in it someday. 373 gears and 255 tires. Old school Camaro wheels painted three different colors. Factory power disc brake swap. Big block radiator cowl hood but its rough. Click image for larger version

You're making the smart move by sticking with the 350. Buddy of mine bought a '71 Elco just like in the summer of '16 and kept telling everyone that he was going to take it longhauling in '17. Somewhere along the way, he got the bright idea to try and swap a 6.0L LS into it with less than a year to get it done.

Fast forward to the '17 tour, and my navigator and I are pulling into the last stop of the tour and I said "I wonder where [X} is with his El Camino? He said he would be here". The guy driving the '62 Chevy parked next to us sticks his head out the window and says "Do you mean [X] from Kansas City? If you see him, tell him he left his wiring harness on the table in my shop".

Four years later and that El Camino still doesn't run right at all times. Of course, that's what happens when you cheap out on the donor vehicles for those types of swaps. I think he'll eventually end up going with a different block, but he's savoring the fact that it's running at the moment.

All that being said, Elcos are a great platform to start with on a build. It should be sweet once you get it all buttoned up.
