Mat, I also am no brake expert. I am not familiar with the "oem style" conversion from Wilwood. However, OEM brakes utilizing D52 brake pads have been used for eons on a variety of GM vehicles. They use a single piston floating caliper.Originally posted by falfa62 View PostPondering over my front disc brakes this evening. This is the situation, i am converting my front drums to disc using an oem style conversion using wilwood D52 calipers as an upgrade over the stock big GM units. The install went smoothly but the test drives did not. The brakes bite excellent and stop the car superbly, the problem is that the calipers will not release from the rotor enough causing the brakes to engage all the time (and get very hot). Any info will be much appreciated. Thank You.
All brake system need a way to apply pressure to engage the brakes and a way to release the brakes. Calipers with the piston(s) on one side of the rotor are of the floating type. Calipers with the piston(s) on both sides of the rotor are usually considered a fixed type. With the piston(s) fully retracted into the caliper bores with a fresh set of pads, the rotors should spin freely.
A floating style caliper (which I believe you have) should "float" freely on the mounts. Make sure all pins, o-rings and bushings are lubed (sil glyde works great). When you depress the brake pedal, the piston(s) should move out of their bores to force the pads against the rotor. During normal operation, pressure applied to the brake pedal will apply the brakes and wheel bearing play(disc) or spring(drum) will release the brakes.
I feel that your conversion kit should have came with a new master cylinder as drum and disc brakes normally are different. If your kit did not, you will need to contact Wilwood and find out why. Maybe their system doesn't need different M/C and a porportioning valve??
Sorry about the long answer to your original question. You may solve your issue with a simple bearing adjustment or you may need additional components. You may have gotten defective parts already (sticking pistons in caliper, imploded hoses creating a sort of check valve, etc.). A systematic approach with your diagnostics should reveal the problem in short order. Personally, I would start at the wheel and work back towards the pedal as/if needed.
Good Luck

the new master cylinder and prop valve is going to be installed at the same time i switch my brakes back over. I am also trying to avoid having to go through and bleed the brakes more times than necessary. The brake kit that i bought was a wheel kit only(no master) from classic performance products(cpp). New spindles, brackets, rotors, bearings, calipers, and stainless braided lines where included in the kit. Lets hope none of the new parts are defective. Also, the pistons in the calipers depress freely without obstruction if done by hand(small prying tool with very little pressure applied) with the wheel of. This is why i am wondering if the master cylinder is holding the incorrect amount of residual pressure in the lines. Thanks everyone. I really do enjoy everyone's two cents.Last edited by falfa62; June 14, 2012, 03:10 PM.Comment

now that we have returned from the power tour, withdrawal is setting in, and i really wonder...could we get the powers that be to quit adding sulfates to the giggle gas(N2O) so it could be used for the best use?? not chemical horsepower!! so myself and others could lighten up??
