My door has two springs - only one broke so I am wondering what to expect when unwinding the one that hasn't broken yet.

With only 1 spring broken, I can get the door open with some manual assistance but I don't want to open it again until I am ready to fix it (or have it fixed).

How did you size the springs?
wire gauge, inner diameter, length, door height
    or by door weight?

Did you use the standard black springs or the high cycle or galvanized or ??

Where did you get the springs?

      MASTER COMPLICATOR!

call a door guy, have them do it. keep all body parts intact!

won't be too expensive, and you'll still be physically able to do POWER TOUR!

      • If you are not sure of doing it yourself call someone, but if you are going to do it yourself you can get the door up with one spring and when you go to unwrap the good spring count how many wraps were on it and put that many back on both springs also when you take the cable pullies off mark the shaft and the pully these have to be in time with each other as for the new spring take the old spring to a door company and they can make you one to be a match to the other don't guess that it is right it has to be the same and most of all be careful.
I have done alot of these when you get the winding bars make sure they fit good in the pockets don't use screwdrivers I have a set of specially made bars, but you can make them out of old tire irons, but make sure they fit. Hope this helps.

Should I remove the wagon from the garage before attempting to R&R the springs?
          Hire a professional.

Obviously Greg has done this before. Also, they should have painted a line on the spring and when it winds, the line becomes a series of dots. Count the dots first (in case you lose track while unwinding) and you will know how many turns the spring should be wound. Your garage door supplier should be able to get the correct springs from your door size and type(wood, steel, insulated, etc.). Also, I would suggest that you replace both springs while they are off. They have a life cycle and if one has exceeded it, the other won't be far behind. I doubt your springs will be that expensive for a home garage (as opposed to a commercial door).

            • I've installed torsion springs and have the bars to do it, but when one of mine broke, the cost of having the guy come out and replace them was only a few dollars more than buying the springs so I let him do it.

I've done a FEW over the years and its fairly easy and yes like said if one
broke the other isnt that far behind.... count the stripes as you wind it up...
you can get a base from the spring thats still there... I need to tighten mine
up since I installed the door on my shop(10 X 10 door) they lost a bit of tension
                since then.... 2 = 3/8 " bars and a crescent/adjustable wrench and a ladder is all
you need to tighten them... cant say what wrenches you need to change your spring
as some door companies use different hardware

                • How many pulls do you think it will take for this guy to realize that there may be a problem here?

I am pondering (OK...maybe just wondering) how Allen's garage door problem migrated all the way up here and caused my garage door to act up. I guess I get to go to the store now for a repair patch
At least I don't have to do springs again
