For you gamblers there are 3 casino's 20 miles north of Topeka, Ks on your way to Lincoln, Neb. Don't lose your car there tho.

On the leg between Ames IA and Rochester MN you can stop by Austin MN and drop in to the SPAM museum and gift shop. Yes, I said SPAM.

(insert your favorite Monty Python line here) ;D

For food I recommend the Tender Maid sandwich shop, Piggy Blues BBQ, or the El Mariachi mexican restaurant. The Tender Maid is a small cafe that sells burgers and great home made shakes.

These restaurants are all in downtown Austin. Here is the Chamber of Commerce listing:

I grew up in Austin and every time I come home on leave I go to the Tendermaid. It has been in business almost 70 years now. Small but good, just the way mom and pop restaurants all used to be.

All the Explorer is is something for me to wrench on that happened to be very cheap! ;) I have no illusions of making some power house out of it (unless I go 2 wheel drive). It's just nice to have something of my own to wrench on for the time being. That, and have something to drive back and forth to work. If I can talk the wife into letting me get that Merc, I'll drop the Explorer in a minute if that's what it takes to "seal the deal"!

For SPAM sandwiches there are a couple of restaurants that serve them; Johnny's and Jerry's. I can check whne I get home and can give better details.

It's not the destination, but the journey and the friends you make along the way that counts.

We're planning on diamond mining also. Are there any casinos other than the ones north of Topeka?

There are some more casino's around KC, Mo also. The ones north of Topeka are the only ones in Ks.
