Depending on the route, there is a sculpture garden near Baraboo WI. All his stuff is welded from pieces of scrap iron, including his Forevertron, the largest sculpture in the world made from scrap iron at 32 tons

I would be very interested to hear how many Sidetrips you have time for!!! This does not include your trip to and from powertour. Just during the tour. Last year as it was our first tour we had no time to do any sidetours. The up early, hotel breakfast, check over truck go to morning meeting and then haul a**to sit in traffic for 2 hours to get out of city. Stop for a food stop by a vender who ran out, wait another 30 minutes in traffic to get back on road. Arrive at venue to sit in traffic another 45 minutes to get in and have card stamped. All by 5-6 pm. Beat go find motel and supper. Now is when the fun began!! 7;30-8;00 start the parking lot tour and Bull sessions. Them I liked very much. Gas stops were great as the 29 always draws a crowd. I guess this year I have just decided to slow the pace a little. We are keeping our MN and WI reservations and are going to try to make those two stops after the Black Hills tour.

This is my Fourth Tour. I have never went to the morning meeting. I usually take my own route. I get to the venue look at all the local cars because I see all of the tour cars every day. Check in. Have dinner with friends. Sit in the pool/parking lot. However if there are things I want to do, I do them. It is vacation and seeing the country is part of it. You gotta stop and smell the roses ;D.

this will be my fourth also. we do the same thing...miss the morning meeting. we leave straight from the hotel, get a jump on everyone and get to the venue fairly early. the lines to get in are shorter and we get to set up and watch all the cars coming in.

Might want to be careful driving an older car through the drive thru safari. We went thru one a few years ago and the monkey's would sit on your car and try to peel off anthing they could. They had lots of trim and molding scattered all over the place.

Ft. Scott, KS is named for an old military post. It's still there, still pretty much original, and worth an hour or so to visit. Easy access too: as US54 comes into Ft. Scott, the directions say turn right on US69/US54......if you keep going straight at that intersection (69/54 is an elevated highway there), go under the overpass, and you'll find the National Monument about 2 blocks ahead. Small shopping area and a few restaraunts in the same area as the old fort. Easy in, easy out. ;D
If you are in to old cemetaries, Ft. Scott also is home to a National Cemetary, with many graves dating back to the civil war.

Earlier in this thread it is mentioned that the tour is passing near where Buddy Holly crashed. Not so. Thats Mason City/Clear Lake, straight north of Ames just off I35. The tour is heading east from Ames to Cedar Falls. But, if you don't care about the racing in Cedar Falls, heading north from Ames is also a nice drive.

You can head north on Hwy65 which will take you through Mason City and that is the Buddy Holly crash site. Then from there, north to Austin Mn and on to Rochester. Or you can head east from Mason City on Hwy18 and rejoin the official route to Rochester on Hwy63 at New Hampton Ia.

I have been to the animal thing some time back...was interesting, but been a while, thinking they had a bunch of bears or something similar.
As far as the SAC airplane place, yes, very cool indeed, they used to have it by me, in a suburb of Omaha, Bellevue, on the back corner of Offut AFB, but then they moved it. Have not been there in some time, but thing is, it's out of the way a bit, but easy to get to-probably halfway between Omaha and Lincoln, right off I-80.
I might add, there is a pretty nice state park as well.

What's irritating me, as a resident of Nebraska, I am drawing a complete blank right now...as far as stuff to do.
I blame it on me being obsessed with my Torino and my wife putting up with my car addiction.
                          ;D

Oh, BTW, guys, there are atleast 5 state troopers that live in Ames.

Where is 1320 Kyle when you need him?!?
LOL, then again, for some reason, I can picture about 50 of us busted by LPD for reckless driving and being on 1320. Call it a hunch.

It was open for the participants of Power Tour in 2002.

Can't believe the P/T route planners did not take this stop into consideration. After reviewing the "official" route it appears that I'll have to miss the cornfield north of Clear Lake, Iowa, where the plane crash happened on "the day the music died." The things we miss to stop at a drag strip for lunch.

Don't worry Charles, there'll be other corn fields (and in NE, Milo!). Maybe no plane crashes in them but you can't have everything.

Spent last summer and fall in NE working at cell towers (even one in Belleview). I saw more old cars laying around than I've seen in a long time! Every little town I went through had old cars sitting behind houses, behind garages. Enjoyed my time in NE but didn't have time to really explore.

So, this means that I will have decent cell phone reception up there? That is good news. "Can you hear me now?"
