I got some one-on-one time with Jerry Pitts last night at the Edelbrock "Back to Where it all Began" pre car show charity / celebrity dinner (more on that in a minute)
With a big grin, Jerry says registration is up 10% from last year, he had excitement in his voice. There's still plenty of details to work out at a few of the venues including the logistics of getting both participants and spectators in to the GM proving ground's. I told Jerry we'd hate to lose out on driving the "course" because of the spectators and he says registered HRPT'ers will be routed to Black Lake on a special route. The rest of the "common folk" (22,000 estimated) will cruise at safe speeds on a direct route. This was fanfrigginstastic news!!
I asked about the Long Hauler's ceremony "TBD" status and he agreed, it's still up in the air. Family events has it specifically at the Quicktrip stadium and the game is "away" so I'm not sure what the problem is but Jerry seemed concerned? I would have thought the guys at Hot Rod/Family Events would find something better than a minor league BB stadium, maybe like Ranger stadium or Cowboy Stadium. Maybe this is what they're working on.
I also got a moment with Vic and Christi who, of course, will be joining the Tour for the 18th year. We got a sneak peak at some of the newer Edelbrock cars, one in particular was a '66 Shelby Mustang they're restoring to showroom quality (not going on the tour) and one of the only non-red vehicles in their fleet. With a frown Christi says she'll be a "few days late" joining us this year.
Here's a few pictures from last night. Best part about it was listening to Sam tell his great stories about the beginning of hot rodding. I think you guys know we're firends of the Fooses and normally see them in an informal settin. It was awesome to see that big grin on Sam's face as he met up with old partners Gene Windfield and Andy Brizio. I had the pleasure to sit up front with all these guys and listen to them reminisce.
