1. Don't work on your car in the middle of the tour if it isn't broken
We did our first stop in Miami, OK and since it was only about an hour and 20 minutes away from home, didn't stay at a motel. When I got home that evening I discovered that the FedEx guy had left me a box full of billet parts for my engine. I thought I might as well see how much I could get put on before I went to bed (all of it). About halfway through the project it started getting dark so I decided to finish inside the garage. In my haste, I started the car and moved it with the inlet air temp sensor disconnected. I didn't know that was a bad thing until the next morning when I started out for the Miami to Stillwater leg. I had a check engine light that would not go out. I almost aborted the rest of the trip. After a few start ups and shut downs later in the day the computer was a happy camper again and the light went out.
2. Just cause a group of cars have PT stickers on them doesn't mean they know where they are going
Running late on the Miami to Stillwater leg due to the aforementioned check engine light, I opted to skip part of the route and shortcut my way to Tulsa. When I got into Tulsa my GPS wanted to run me around in circles. Then I spotted a group of PT cars running in a tight formation. One of the guys waved at me as they went by so I fell in behind them. We seemed to be making great progress for a while. Then we exited the highway, made a series of lefts and started going back the way we came. Reminded me of the bumper sticker that says "Don't follow me, I'm lost too". We eventually got on the right road and later at a gas stop the wife in the lead car said that she was telling her husband to take the exit but there was a truck pulling a trailer blocking him from getting over in the right lane.
3. Lost, turned around, confused, whatever - it ain't so bad
As long as you know where you are going it's not so important to know where you are. We made Stillwater just fine and in plenty of time. I got to meet and visit with some nice people. I told my copilot that we signed up for an adventure and we got our money's worth.
4. A Forum Freaks t-shirt is a good thing to have on
I was walking around in a daze at Miami and I heard a voice say something about BangShift. It was one of the freaks introducing himself (Ed I think). A few minutes later we were joined by another guy who introduced himself (Phil I think). The old guys wouldn't have known the new guy without the shirt. Sorry guys - I'm terrible at remembering names- it was a pleasure meeting you both.
Anyway, my first time was a blast! 3 stops was just not enough and I have a firm commitment from the wife to do the Long Haul next year. I hope everybody had a safe trip home. I hope to meet a lot more of you next year.
