  • Rear end ratio question?

I am tired of listening to people use their gears as a reason to not go on the tour or why they have to always tow their car. What rear end gears do you have in your car? Also what kind of tranny are you running? What size motor are you running

Mine has 3.08 gears with a 4 speed and a 283 so I run most of the tour between 3000 and 3500 rpms. My fuel economy(if you can call it that) is around 15 mpg.

I just want some ammunition to punch holes in arguments.

200 cu.in. 6 cylinder '66 Mustang with a T5 and 3.20 rear end. With a suspect tune, I get about 23-24mpg. Engine rpm at highway speeds is unknown.

I have the low power segment of the hobby covered.

The '65 Imp runs (when it runs) a 3.31 rear and a 700r4 trans. The '04 GTO has a 6-speed with double overdrive. It turns about 2100 RPMs at 80 MPH.

            '77 Skylark has TKO-600 w/.64 overdrive and 3.23's out back, stock tires on a 14" rim and turns about ~2,000rpm @ 80mph
'67 T-bird has no O/D and a 3.00 rear with stock 15" tires, rpm unknown but figuring around 3300rpm at 80mph and about 2200rpm at 60mph.
'72 Centurion has no O/D and 2.93 rear with same tire size as the T-bird, ~3,000rpm@80mph and 2,000rpm@60mph.
'69 Firebird had .70 O/D and 2.73 rear on a 14" rim and fairly tall tire turned about 1,800rpm at 80mph. (Yeah it did great burn outs, wasn't quick but it was fast!)

I'll be changing out the rear end in the Skylark, not sure to what gears, I'll decided that after I build the engine and see how low the torque curve starts.
            Escaped on a technicality.

                  The 54 has 3.50 gears with a 700R4, RPM at 70 MPH 2170
The 63 Meteor with a 390 will probably run 2.50 gears for traveling across country, and I may carry a set of 4.11s if I want to get froggy with it ;)

                      Re: Rear end ratio question?

Two weeks back I ran for 2.5 hours one-way to the dragstrip with 3.9 gears in the back and a good old 3 speed automatic and 275/60/15 tires.
500" stroker-engine with dual 625 carbs. Car weighed fully loaded with stuff roughly about 5000 lbs I think.
The engine used 1 liter of gas on 5 kilometers. That's 11.76 MPG.

They're talking about lowering the national speed limit to 55 so going with some good gears may be an option after all.

What does the posted speed limit have to do with your cruising speed?

I view it as a "suggestion" which is seldom taken in my vehicles :
