  • Official route, or other route

It looks to me like the official route always goes through the lunch stop every day. That's great, but is that the most direct route?

I'd like to know who is taking a different route than the official route. Last year we took the fast route two days, but the official route most days. Any suggestions on which is the best way to go?

Coming home I have to figure out a route that avoids Chicago!!

It's not the fastest for a couple of the legs but to me it's not a race so I'm going to enjoy the drive and take in a few scenic stops. You can play around with google maps and see if there is a better route for you personally.

The official route takes you thru small towns and that is where everyone comes out to watch the cars go by. Much more fun the the fastest route

When we leave Norwalk, we are going to run US 6 to Iowa, except to bypass the south side of Chicago Thursday morning. My wife wants to travel through the Amish country, is the reaason. When we leave the Dells, we are going to go on 90/94 to I 39 south to I 57 south to I 24 east to Paducah KY. When we ended up in Madison WI several years ago, there were lots of cars from the southeast states going home this way.

I want to do everything in my power to avoid Chicago at all costs.

I downloaded the routes into my Garmin that were posted here. I may rethink them if they go through Chicago.

Thursday morning we are leaving Crown Point, driving to Peotone, Wilmington and to highway 47 north to Morris which will bypass the morning rush traffic on the interstate. We have friends in that area that recomended this route.

We are not doing either lunch stop. If US 6 across IL gets boring, we will go to Sterling and join back up with the route. My wife wants to drive through some of the Amish country in Indiana. We're not used to the bad traffic!

It's normal where I live but I'm still not tolerant of it

Looks like the route goes through Chicago to get lunch. I'll pass that day and go right to Iowa.
