This singular video from the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed is the only thing that you really need to see to understand the event and what makes it so incredible. You are about to watch a driver take a car that is worth like $30,000,000 and drive it like it is a rental that he’s got the insurance on. This is one of the original six Shelby Daytona Coupe examples that were produced to compete the Ferraris in 1964 and when you hear this car, things inside you will physically respond. We’re talking tingles, feelings, perhaps a single tear, it is too early to really judge everyone’s individual reaction but this is awesome.
As the story goes, these cars were made as a way to improve the aero of the iconic Shelby Cobra that had all the power and acceleration in the world but could not MPH because of its design. Pete Brock was the man on the design job for these cars and they were treated like second class citizens in the shop and always kind of pushed to the side. Hell, even after they were raced and used up, they were pretty much all sold for a few bucks more than scrap and one of them was even beaten three-quarters of the way to death by Craig Breedlove on the Bonneville Salt Flats setting endurance records.
As magnificent as these cars are to see sitting in a museum, nothing can compare to seeing them actually being driven hard. As you will note, this guy did not take it easy and he really gave this thing the kane a couple of times. The burnout launch is awesome. No, not the fastest way up but who cares. When you hear this thing on acceleration and deceleration you’ll find your BangShifty happy place!
