In 1967 Hurst Ran The Coolest Contest Ever For Members Of The Armed Forces – Free Trip To Daytona 500 AND A Date With Linda Vaughn!

In 1967 Hurst Ran The Coolest Contest Ever For Members Of The Armed Forces – Free Trip To Daytona 500 AND A Date With Linda Vaughn!

I was recently given piles and piles of old magazines by a friend who needed to clean out his house because he’s moving. Among the treasures is a pretty cool swath of copies of 1966 and 1967 issues of Stock Car Racing magazine. This book features coverage of top line stock car races along with lots of local action as well. It was a full-tilt magazine with nice paper, lots of ads, and coverage from events all over the country. Les Lovett, the legendary drag photographer was one of their main shooter during the late 1960s. He obviously defected back to drag racing at some point, thankfully.

Anyway, I was flipping through the magazines and came to the back page of one copy and was greeted by the sight you see below. Linda Vaughn leaning on an as et unidentified Pontiac and looking mighty fine. She was posed in this photo because it was promoting an awesome contest that Hurst was running that year for the members of its Defenders Armed Forces Club. Open only to members of the club, and by proxy of that, members of the armed forces, you had to send your application in with a 30 word note that fulfilled the following open ended sentence: “I want to win the Date At Daytona, and everything that goes with it, because…

So what did you win if you were the lucky guy who got the phone call or letter back?

You’d be flown to the 1967 Daytona 500 from anywhere in the world, you’d spend and evening with Linda Vaughn, dinner with NASCAR brass, wide open access to the pits and mechanics, the keys for a “wild new car Pontiac is going to introduce” for the weekend, trackside seats, a seat in the pace car with Linda and Bill France, and we’re guessing all the booze you could drink.

How is that for a prize pack?!
