Question Of The Day: What Would You Require In Order To Hop Into A Single-Passenger Drone?

Question Of The Day: What Would You Require In Order To Hop Into A Single-Passenger Drone?

I’ve got a business administration degree and have worked with several companies on maximizing their productivity, and in that role, I was often asked questions about how to maximize employee productivity. There’s plenty of ways to create happy workers that are taken care of…but they cost money, bosses and CEOs are tightwads, and at least here in America, it becomes a story of the eternal struggle. Over in China, that doesn’t quite exist like that…you have a job, you work, and you work hard. But China’s newfound love with the automobile has created traffic jams of biblical proportions. What do you do when an important person within the company is in Tianjin and needs to be in Beijing? Drive? Catch a train?

How about having the company send a single passenger drone to pick them up instead? That’s what you are looking at: the eHang 184, which just got cleared to begin testing in Nevada by the state’s Institute for Autonomous Systems. According to the Endgadget article (CLICK HERE), “In addition to providing basic clearance, the move will also have the Institute create criteria that shows the airworthiness of the autonomous single-seater to the Federal Aviation Administration. It’s not certain just where the 184 will fly, although it’ll sometimes need restricted airspace.”

It is an interesting and novel concept, and in a kind of morbid way, it would be safer than conventional flying: if something happened, only the passenger is affected. It’s almost like the single-pod mobile that was in The Jetsons…almost. I will not be embracing this technology willingly, so for my defense, I’ll say that the only way I’ll be in one of these things is if I’m unconscious and placed there by someone else. But what about you…could you see this as a viable transportation option, or would you just as soon quit your job and become a farmer?
