BangShift Daily Tune Up: Chevy Van – Sammy Johns (1973)

The 1970s were about vans, chicks, and getting busy with chicks in vans. Sammy Johns understood this trend and released the song Chevy Van in 1973. Although it wasn’t an immediate hit, the song roared up popularity during 1975 and sold more than a million copies charting at #5.

Chevy Van is a pretty simple tale of a dude rolling down the highway who picks up a girl who is hitchhiking on the side of the road. In a story reminiscent of the “letters” section of an adult magazine (we just read the articles!), the two of them get to know each other in the biblical sense after spending some time on the road in said van. Is it ironic that today your chances of getting a girl to get into a windowless Chevy van (willingly) are slim to none? Times were simpler then, I suppose.

While no direct references are made, we’re pretty sure a bong and copious amounts of carpeting in the van were a part of the seduction here. All’s well that ends well!
