Compact, Roomy And Sporting…No, It’s Not The Newest Crossover, It’s This 1976 Pontiac Astre!

A couple of weeks ago, as I was cruising car lots, I got to talking with a salesman. He was bent on making a sale, and was the type that wasn’t going to take “no” for an answer. He tried every possible method he could use to try to figure out what I was looking for without blatantly asking. I told him plain as day: I want performance well above the normal buyer’s level, I want useable interior room without going to a gigantic vehicle, I want some semblance of economy, and I don’t want what everyone else has. His offering? A 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander. Define: epic failure. I didn’t even bother with explaining why he was wrong…I just accepted his business card and left quickly.

You can have small, sporty and roomy without diving into the sea of crossovers. Take this 1976 Pontiac Astre. It’s small, all right. Ok, it’s not too bad size-wise when compared with modern machines, but for it’s time it was absolutely diminutive. As a two-door wagon, it’s plenty roomy for about anything you could use it for…just look at that room in the rear! You’re guaranteed to never see one on the road near you anytime soon, and if you want sporting…well, that worked over Chevrolet 350 and 700R4 automatic will be perfect for raising your pulse in the morning. And with it’s light weight and overdrive, you might even see a bit of economy out of this neat little Pontiac, if you can keep your foot out of it.

We doubt you ever would, though.
