Rough Start: Another Clean Oldsmobile Omega? Hey, It’s Christmas…Treat Yourself!

Five thousand dollars…that’s the entirety of the budget that the Rough Start series gets to work with. That’s not purchase price of the car, that’s the entire budget to start with. That means that those five stacks needs to wind up getting you a running, driving ride that looks decent, performs decent, or has some kind of reason to exist otherwise. Unfortunately, that means that a lot of predictable choices are out of the question. But the good thing is that all of the domestic manufacturers really didn’t have any creativity when it came to the hard parts of the cars, so if you’re mechanically inclined, you can make do with an off-brand.

GM X-body cars are still great entry points. You can choose the earlier models with the first-gen F-body front clip or, like this 1978 Oldsmobile Omega, the later version with the second-gen F-car front subframe and suspension. V8 engines from Buick, Oldsmobile and Chevrolet were used, so it’s simply a matter of picking your poison. We don’t know the story of this mill, but it’s ready to drive right now according to the ad, so that’s a plus. While you can find four and five-speed Omegas, the automatic is a more likely find. And whoever shod this clean example with the slot mags, pat yourself on the back.

Four grand puts you in a lightweight two-door Nova cousin that, far as we can tell, needs nothing to drive away. Save that last grand and roll around contentedly. This Olds seems to be that good.

That car just oozes 70’s vibe! Glad it’s on the other side of the country or an impulse buy would have it in my driveway! Car is bitchin!

260 v8 powered beast. but at 4k if the body is clean, and not a rusty mess underside. still an ok deal,, But you can get mid 70’s clean cutlasses for the same cash with a 350v8, that doesn’t ride like a stage coach.
