Rough Start: The C4 Corvette Of Your Cheap 1980s Nostalgia Dreams!

Rough Start: The C4 Corvette Of Your Cheap 1980s Nostalgia Dreams!

A few days ago, Chad put up a question in the form of a C4 Corvette that was very well built, clean as a whistle, and in need of a bit of minor maintenance that the owner wasn’t willing to invest the time and effort into. But the bigger idea was that C4 Corvettes, on the whole, are seriously underrated and that passing one over should be reconsidered. Think about it…solid bones, stout suspension, straightforward 1980s styling that holds up well, and plenty of engine options to choose from. A tweak here, a tweak there, and before you know it you’ve got a very solid bit of kit that might have some snickering and making Rad Racer jokes, right up until you blow that gold-chainer myth right into the weeds, along with their doors.

Finding an appropriate Rough Start C4 Corvette is always going to be a bit tricky. There is a balance that needs to be met between useable and cheap. Nobody wants to get stuck with a pooch, and nobody wants some hacked-up nightmare that has the half-inch thick fake wood paneling that gets so much glare that it overrules the early 1980s’ “Atari” digital dash. But finding one that’s been around the block and doesn’t need much is a very attainable goal, and we’ve found an example, a 1984 in silver, wearing 1990s style wheels. V8, automatic, two seats and it doesn’t look like it’s been under water at any point in time. You want the start of something really good? You’d be hard-pressed to find a cleaner example for a better price. Four grand buys the car, and a thousand left over could feed the 350 underhood a bit of spray for some cheap fun!

Of all the cars I’ve sold, the ’86 Corvette is probably one of the two or three I miss most. They’re a lot of fun to drive, even if early C4s could use some engine and interior upgrades.
